Lorelei were fabled siren who lured Rhine boatmen to their destruction on the rocks.  This legend has inspired a few operas, but you can create your own scenario by looking at a few cruises.  Perhaps you’ll be able to see your own Lorelei when you take a Rhine River cruise. This cruise is probably one of the most popular cruises in Europe.  If you are single, or like an adventure or just plain looking for fun,  then this is a perfect cruise.  The scenery is so stunning that you could find yourself standing next to a stranger at the railing, and both in awe of the castles sliding by.  If you are an adventurer then the tall rock faces may beckon.  There’s plenty of exploration opportunities onshore as you dock at various sites along the way.

Some Rhine River cruise operators will take you only along the Rhine while others may take you along a few tributaries as well.  Some of the latter will end up carrying you into historic Austria, Hungary or the Netherlands.  Any and all of those countries provide ample opportunity for sightseeing and having fun with new found friends.  The Netherlands has quite a few canals and other waterways of its own.  Austria is full of beautiful flowers in the Spring and historic, ancient towns that you can explore anytime.  Try and visit the Spanish Riding School and its fabled Lipizzaner stallions, if you get the chance.  Hungary, of course, was home to Franz Liszt and it’s full of architecturally interesting buildings.

Your Rhine River cruise may take you to Basel in Switzerland.  This is the second largest city in this landlocked and traditionally neutral nation.  Visit the medieval town hall in the city, or look at works by Picasso and Dali at the Museum of Fine Art.  Look back down at the Rhine from the Wettstein Bridge.  Perhaps an excursion to Strasbourg, which is in the heart of France’s Alsace region, is on your list.  This area has a mix of both German and French culture, which makes it very interesting and the accents can be quite different from German or French.  Perhaps you’d like to tour around Bamberg in Germany and have a taste of Smokebeer.  You can also visit the 11th century cathedral of the Holy Roman Emperor Heinrich II.  Pope Benedict, the current pope, is also from Germany.

Some operators of Rhine River Cruise go to Koblenz in Germany, where the Rhine and Moselle Rivers converge.   You’ll see many wine regions on your river cruise, and perhaps a few tastings are in order when you visit the various towns!  Woodlands, lakes and meadows fill this gorgeous region.  Also on the agenda are stops at Passau, Vienna, Budapest and Amsterdam, if your cruise makes use of the many Rhine tributaries.   Some cruises have stops where you can stay at area hotels.   Tour guides will make your Rhine River Cruise hassle-free.

As you step off your cruise and turn to the other passengers, remember, never say just good-bye.  Always tell them “bis wir uns wiedersehen”, or simply “wiedersehen” for short.  This means, “until we meet again.”
